Farm and estate entrance gates in Meath
A farm entrance gate has a harder life than a suburban one. It gets opened in the dark, clipped by trailers, leaned on by cattle and never gets repainted, so it has to be built for that from the start.
Width is the first decision
Machinery has grown. An entrance that was fine for a tractor and a link box twenty years ago will not take a modern harvester or a widened slurry tanker. Measure the widest thing that has to get through, then add room for the fact that it will be reversed through in the rain.
Where a very wide opening is needed, two leaves of unequal width often work better than a matched pair, with the smaller leaf used day to day.
Building for abuse
Heavier frame sections, full welded joints rather than bolted, adjustable hanging hardware and a bottom rail high enough not to catch on rutted ground. Diagonal bracing keeps the leaf square, because a farm gate that starts to drop will be dragging within a season.
Hanging posts matter as much as the gate. A heavy gate on an undersized post or a shallow foundation will lean, so we specify the post and the concrete along with the gate.
Finish
Hot dip galvanised, always. Farm gates are outside permanently, often in contact with slurry and washdown, and no paint system will keep up. Galvanising also survives the knocks that would chip a coating.
Where the entrance is to a house on the farm rather than the yard, a powder coat over the galvanising gives the appearance without sacrificing durability.
