Steel delivery and craneage: planning the lift
Delivery day is when a steel job either goes smoothly or turns into a very expensive morning. Almost all of the risk can be removed with a short conversation beforehand.
Access comes first
Before anything is fabricated we ask how the steel gets from the road to its final position. A six metre beam needs six metres of clear straight route, and the pinch point is usually a side passage, a gateway or a turn at the back of the house.
Where the route will not take it, the answer is usually a spliced design from the engineer, which is far cheaper to arrange in advance than to discover on the day.
Offloading
Light items are hand offloaded. Anything heavier needs a crane, a telehandler or a hiab on the delivery vehicle, and which one depends on weight, reach and where the vehicle can park.
Clarify early who is providing the lift. A common and expensive misunderstanding is each party assuming the other has arranged craneage.
What has to be ready
Padstones cast and cured, temporary propping installed and adequate, the route clear, and someone on site with authority to sign for the steel. If the site is not ready, tell us before the lorry leaves rather than after it arrives.
We can usually hold finished steel for a short period without drama, which is far cheaper than a wasted delivery and a cancelled crane.
City centre and restricted sites
Dublin city deliveries often involve timing restrictions, permits and limited parking. We plan deliveries around those and will schedule early morning slots where that is what works.
Send site photographs including the road frontage and the route in, and we will plan the vehicle and the lift with you.
