What drives the cost of a steel beam in Dublin
We are asked for a price per metre almost every week, and we do not quote that way. Two beams of the same length can differ substantially in price, and the reasons are worth knowing before you compare quotes.
The five things that move the price
Section size and weight come first: steel is bought by the tonne, so a 254x146x43 beam costs considerably more than a 152x89x16 of the same length. Length is second, and beyond a certain point transport becomes a factor in its own right.
Third is the connection work. A plain beam cut to length is quick. The same beam with end plates, cleats, stiffeners and thirty drilled holes carries real workshop hours. Fourth is the finish, where hot dip galvanising costs more than primer. Fifth is delivery and any craneage.
Steel prices move
The raw material price is set by a global market and has been volatile in recent years. A quote given three months ago may no longer be valid, which is why quotes carry a validity period. It is not a sales tactic.
For that reason we will give an honest budget figure early on, then a firm price when the drawings are final and you are ready to order.
Comparing quotes fairly
When comparing fabricators, check that each quote includes the same scope: the connections, the finish, delivery to your site, and the EN 1090 documentation. A cheaper price that excludes delivery, excludes galvanising or comes without certification is not the same product.
Also check the lead time. Steel that arrives two weeks late on a site with trades booked costs far more than the difference between two quotes.
