What ISO 9001 means in a steel workshop
ISO 9001 appears on a lot of letterheads and means very little to most customers. In a fabrication workshop it has some concrete effects that are worth knowing about.
It is about repeatability, not perfection
ISO 9001 does not certify that products are good. It certifies that a business has documented processes, follows them, records what it does and acts on problems. The point is that the tenth job is made the same way as the first, by whoever is on shift.
For a customer that translates into predictability: the same checks, the same paperwork and the same handover every time.
What it looks like day to day
Orders are recorded with the drawing revision they were made from, so nobody fabricates from a superseded drawing. Incoming steel is checked against its mill certificate and traceable to the job. Inspection happens at defined points rather than whenever someone thinks to look.
When something does go wrong, it is recorded as a nonconformance and the cause is addressed, which is how a workshop stops making the same mistake twice.
How it works with EN 1090
EN 1090-1 requires factory production control specific to structural steel: welder qualifications, welding procedures, weld inspection and material traceability. ISO 9001 is the broader management system around it covering quoting, purchasing, delivery and customer feedback.

What to ask for
Ask for the certificate numbers and check that the scope covers the work you are buying. A certificate covering a different activity is not relevant to your order.
Both certifications are subject to periodic external audit, which is what keeps them meaningful.
