What a steel staircase costs in Dublin
Steel stairs range from a plain industrial flight to a feature stair that becomes the centrepiece of a hallway. The price range is just as wide, and it is driven by decisions you make rather than by the number of steps.
The stringer decides most of it
A twin channel stringer with folded steel treads is the most economical arrangement and is what most industrial and external stairs use. A single central spine stringer costs more, because the spine has to be far heavier to resist twisting and every tread is cantilevered off it.
A zig zag or cranked stringer, where the steel follows the profile of the steps, is more labour again: every fold is set out, cut and welded, and the welds are dressed if the steel will be seen. That is the arrangement behind most of the feature stairs people send us photographs of.
Treads and infill
Steel pan treads to receive concrete, timber or stone are common in houses, because the finish is chosen later by the interior designer. Open grating or chequer plate suits industrial and external use. Solid folded plate treads sit between the two.
Timber and stone treads are supplied by others in most cases, so we fabricate the pans to the exact thickness of the chosen finish. Tell us the finish early, because changing from 20mm oak to 30mm stone after fabrication means every tread is wrong.
Balustrade and handrail
The balustrade is often half the cost of a domestic stair. A simple flat bar and upright balustrade is straightforward, while a glass balustrade with stainless standoffs, or a slim vertical bar design with tight spacing, involves far more parts and far more finishing.
Whatever the design, it has to satisfy Part K for guarding height and the gap between elements. We design to that as standard rather than making something that has to be altered at inspection.
Measurement, finish and delivery
We measure on site before fabrication. A stair is one of the least forgiving things to make from a drawing alone, because floor to floor height on a real build is never exactly what the plan says, and a 10mm error is spread across every riser.
Finish options run from primer, through powder coating in any RAL colour, to hot dip galvanising for external stairs. Send us a sketch or a photo of the opening with the floor to floor height and we will quote it properly.
