Steel fabrication in Wicklow: a practical guide
Wicklow projects bring two conditions that shape almost every steel decision: ground that slopes and air that carries salt. Both are manageable if they are dealt with at design stage.
Sloping ground
Houses stepping down a hillside need frames rather than single beams, with columns of differing lengths and base plates at multiple levels. Accurate setting out in the workshop is what prevents a day of flame cutting on a slope.
It also affects gates and railings, where a swinging gate on a rising drive usually has to become a slider, and railings need raking rather than stepped panels to look right.
Coastal exposure
From Bray through Greystones and down the coast, salt in the air shortens the life of any finish. Hot dip galvanising, ideally with a powder coat over it, is the specification we recommend for anything exposed, and grade 316 rather than 304 where stainless is used.
Internal steel within a heated building envelope is unaffected and a standard primer is sufficient.
Access and delivery
Wicklow site access is the practical constraint more often than anything else. Narrow lanes, steep drives and restricted turning areas all affect what can be delivered in one load.
A photograph of the site entrance and the route in lets us plan the vehicle and the offload properly rather than discovering a problem with a loaded lorry.
Certification and quoting
All structural work is fabricated under EN 1090-1 EXC3 with documentation supplied, under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
